The state of the City with Mayor Ken Welch

The Business and Professional Women of St. Petersburg–Pinellas recently welcomed Mayor Kenneth T. Welch, the 54th Mayor of St. Petersburg and the first African American mayor in the city’s history, for an engaging and informative luncheon discussion on the future of our community.

A proud third-generation St. Petersburg native, Mayor Welch shared insights from his remarkable journey of public service spanning more than 25 years, including his tenure on the Pinellas County Commission and his leadership as mayor. Attendees heard firsthand about the key initiatives shaping St. Petersburg’s future, including Housing Opportunities for All, efforts to improve affordability, the transformative redevelopment of the Historic Gas Plant District, and major infrastructure investments through the St. Pete Agile Resilience (SPAR) Plan.

Mayor Welch’s personal story provided powerful context for his vision of inclusive progress. Raised in South St. Petersburg, he reflected on his family’s deep roots in the community and the impact of redevelopment projects that transformed the neighborhoods where his grandparents lived, worked, and worshipped. These experiences have helped shape his commitment to ensuring that growth and opportunity benefit every resident and every neighborhood.

A graduate of Lakewood High School, the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, and Florida A&M University, Mayor Welch built a successful career in business, accounting, technology, and administration before entering public service. During his two decades on the Pinellas County Commission, he championed initiatives focused on affordable housing, poverty reduction, criminal justice reform, workforce development, environmental protection, and public health.

Mayor Welch also discussed his leadership during critical moments for the community, including the county’s response to COVID-19 and efforts to achieve one of Florida’s highest census participation rates. His long record of service and numerous leadership recognitions underscore his dedication to creating authentic progress through collaboration and partnership.

The luncheon provided members and guests with a valuable opportunity to learn more about the challenges and opportunities facing St. Petersburg and to hear directly from one of the region’s most influential leaders. We thank Mayor Welch for sharing his time, perspective, and vision for the future of our city.
